What's up from Maryland!

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to post something here to introduce myself. I'm a fairly new Member to CBN but I have been a visitor of this site for quite awhile now (searching for tips, checking out new music, etc). I thought I'd finally get around to posting and and talking to fellow enthusiasts instead of just lurkin' around ha.

I was first introduced to the magical world of CBG's while I was going to art school in York, PA. I heard about a cigar box guitar exhibit at the local gallery and was instantly intrigued. Shane Speal was performing in the gallery that day and I thought his music was the coolest thing I've heard in a long time!

Since then I started checking out cool designs and builds but never getting around to building one myself. That changed when I went to the Cigar Box Guitar Festival last year. I had a very limited budget but managed to buy a nice wooden box and fretboard and a 4-set of Shane Speal tuners from C.B.Gitty.  So now I'm up to two builds and have plans for more.

Anyway, something else I wanted to bring up was that I volunteer with Girls Rock! Baltimore, a not-for-profit rock camp for girls that a friend and I started last year after having taught and volunteered with Girls Rock! DC in previous years. We had a small yet, successful camp last year. This year we have limited volunteers and time so instead of doing the week long summer camp we will be doing a series of day-long workshops. In our first installment we will be teaching campers to build, design and play Cigar Box Guitars! I was super excited to get started on the planning for this. Our goal has always been to build a community full of bright, young female musicians in Baltimore. So what better way to do this than through the power of the cigar box guitar!

Anywho, this is an awesome community here full of skilled builders and players. I just wanted to say what's up and that it's great to be here! Also if you have any friend/family ties to Baltimore, MD who may be interested in what we're doing at Girls Rock send them our way =)

  • Glad to hear of your work with Girls Rock Baltimore! Good luck with your CBG workshop!
  • Welcome from Canada Selena
  • I'll commit 20 decent guitar size boxes to you right now and possibly more. I'll also give you 20 smaller boxes if you want them. The smaller ones may be better for diddley bows and or amps.

I ride through Waldorf every Thursday in the morning. Regardless we'll work it out.

    I'm in Solomons.

    • Whoa thanks! That will completely cover our box needs actually. And smaller boxes for diddley bows would be great. I was pondering on if it would be good for the younger girls to build one-strings, and it would be easier for them to learn to play. I would Love to have them assemble amps as well (because I want them to learn about piezo pickups), we discussed having a separate amp workshop for that.

But yeah, Thursdays sound good to me. Perhaps not this week but sometime soon. We'll talk =)

    • I'll be meeting with a client on Saturday the 26th at noon off of Middletown road if that works. Could meet up with you anywhere off of 301 by 12:30.  Just shoot me a message when it's right.

    • That works for me. Maybe we could meet up at the mall? I'm around there. But yeah I'll message you.

  • Hi Selena, welcome to the Nation. Always good to have another DC area member around!

  • Welcome to the Nation Selena. I see you're in southern MD.

Very cool program you're involved with. I could donate a few boxes to the cause if needed.

    • Hey thanks =) Yup, here in Waldorf.

But yeah wow, that would be great! I'm in the midst of building our materials list and boxes are definitely at the top of the list, ha. If you have some boxes to spare we'd definitely be grateful.
