New to CBN

Hi...

I am new to CBN and to cigar box guitars. My name is Steve aka 'Stray Cat Steve'.  I live in Jacksonville, TX... but work in Tyler, TX.

I've been playing the guitar for about 45 years (off and on).  Not really professionally... just for my own pleasure... and for friends, family, parties, etc. I suppose that I don't have much of a singing voice... I was once asked "who do you intend to please with that voice?"... my response was "myself". I mostly play on a Takamini acoustic. At the age of 13, I was given an electric guitar by Waylon Jennings (long story).

My job, family and other interests has kinda gotten in the way of playing music over the last several years. However, I am starting to get back into it after brushing off the cobwebs.  I have recently developed a fascination for cigar box guitars.  I plan to build my first very soon in my new workshop that I recently finished. This endeavor is totally new to me so I will likely have a lot of questions.

Thanks,

Steve

  • Thank you all for the kind comments about my workshop. I must admit that I cleaned up a bit before I took the pics.  I had a lot of sawdust and trash to sweep/throw away.  This workshop was originally built for my Pinewood Derby business.  I have a website that sells Pinewood Derby car kits, parts, tools and supplies to mostly Cub Scout moms and dads. But that's a job... I now want to use my shop for something fun and for me.  So... I am looking forward to using it for guitars very soon. I have been reading and studying several websites (especially this one) for building ideas and techniques.  I have accumulated most of what I need... just need to DO IT!!!

  • Hey Man,

That is a heck of a shop, that must be right up next to heaven. I have a dream to have a shop like that. The only thing I see missing is the girl Friday.

    Take care and God bless.

    • Hey Bobby:

Thanks for the kind words.  I do like my shop... hopefully it will help me build some good units.

I do have have a Girl Friday... Monday through Sunday actually... She's been with me for 20 years now.

      Thanks,

      Steve

  • Steve, my first guitar i bought was a 1978 Takamine F310s Acoustic guitar. and I still have it. Great Guitars!

My workshop doesn't quite look like yours, but that doesn't stop me from building. Can't wait to see what you build using the CNC.

    • Hey BF... thanks for the welcome.  I think Takamine is a '75.  Great guitar!!! I'll bet your workshop is just fine... Some of the best guitars I've seen were built in nothing more than a crowded garage.

I do have some pretty cool ideas for some laser cut guitars.  I hope to find the time soon.

      Thanks,

      Steve

  • Thank you very much for the kind words.  The building is nothing more that a portable building.  I bought it as a shell and then finished the interior myself. Behind the double brown doors is a room where my CNC laser cutter is.  I am looking forward to hopefully making some pretty cool looking guitars.

This appears to be a great website and a friendly forum.  I cant wait to get started!!!

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • Wow! now that's a workshop. I'm too embarrassed to put up a photo of mine.

  • Welcome! I'm new myself so I thought it would be good to welcome you.

BTW, I believe I now have workshop envy. Mine is a garage that is currently half filled with stuff that belongs to my daughter and son-in-law. I have to take tools out into the driveway to get anything done.

    Blessings on you!

    Gary
