New kid from Saginaw

Hey all, new kid here. I've actually been lurking for a while, checking things out, but I never joined because I haven't built one, yet, and couldn't play it if I had. I figured that if I didn't have anything to add to the discussion, why bother? What finally convinced me to join was looking at all the pictures and watching the videos, and not being able to tell people how awesome they are. Every band needs groupies, and for now I'm happy to play that part. :D

I first heard of cigar box guitars a couple of years ago, when Shane posted a link on Fark.com to a video of him playing. When I first heard of a guitar made from a cigar box, I expected something not far removed from the old rubber-band-and-milk-carton contraptions they have you make in kindergarten. Needless to say, I was blown away by what I saw and heard. It was absolutely amazing. Ever since, I've been searching out whatever I could, and one of these days I'll actually get around to building one.

  • Thanks for the welcome. I guess simply joining was a bit of a kick in the ass, because yesterday after work I stopped at the smoke shop. Armed with only a credit card, and a $10 minimum purchase, I walked out with four boxes. A quick jaunt to Home Depot produced a 1x2 too long to fit in the back of my truck. I haven't started construction yet, but I'm really scheming now.

Dude _- I did the same thing -- I didnt' know about CBG Nation --- sort of knew 'the old blues guys often started on a Cigar Box...' but thought -- OK, cool --- then for a couple years I thought about making a rough harp out of a big board and screws as tuners strung over a couple strips of metal --- never got around to building one...then somehow discoverd Shane's site...I very quickly got stoked to finally make one..so i banged one out with a few carefully chosen elements and BAM --- a REAL INSTRUMENT...absolutely changed my whole thought process regarding folk kinstruments and funky one-offs...so I'd say absorb some more, but don't delay and just get a nice hard, straight strip of poplar for teh neck, a decent box (if you want you can do your first one like mine wiht a basswood 'jewelry/cigar' box from a crafts store...5 bucks and damn! now I just hope my CBG 2 I've been slaving over and overbuilding comes out half as nice as my first 'hack job' --- I think if you just tweak the nut and bridge heights after it's built to get the right action --- you'll be hooked __ and now after a few months my slide work is sounding like i almost know what I'm doing... JUMP IN and treat the first one with no expectations -- if you drill a hole and it turns out to need to be moved. just plug the hole with a dowel and drill a new hole...just adds to the funkiness...!
