Hi & a few questions about tools....

Hey all,

I'm play drums but always wanted to build a CBG. I'm totally a beginner with this haven't done any woodwork since school. I've been getting together some basic stuff...got me some mahogany wood, a Cohiba box and gradually getting a few tools together. Just wanted to ask you all, want to pick up a few rasps because I reckon I'll leave the headstock as it is on this one but will probably want to shape the neck a little. I'm seeing lots of rasps flat/half round/round...bastard/fine/extra and just wondering what you reckon would be the best ones to pick up.

  • Hi Nic.  I've recently completed a 3 string using the neck from a scrap Fender copy strategy. I reduced the width  down to 1.25 inches. Managed the task by clamping an old hand saw and using its straight edge as a guide to reduce to. The bulk of the waste I used a jigsaw leaving a small margin to finish off with a flat rasp and sanding to the straight edge with sanding paper. For shaping curves  I used a half round rasp again to remove the bulk of the waste. So for me clamps to hold the work piece and a selection of files including wood rasps. Something to use as a straight edgeoto work to for a guide helped me achieve a smart finish.
