Just finished my 1st freeless acoustic CBG, based on the #Glenn Watt design. 31inch neck, 25inch scale, 42/32/24 gauge strings. Sycamore neck and a 200mm x 180mm x 45mm box made from 7mm ply. Neck finished with Osmo oil wax with fret marked on using pyrograph. 2 x 12mm sound holes. As you might notice it's a corrie-fisted one (left handed to those non-Scots!)

Got it tuned now, just got to learn how to play it!!

Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia. I'm a musical social butterfly: in addition to being a lifelong singer, I seem to collect instruments and play some, pretend to learn others, and "just gaze at the pretties" for still others.
Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia. I'm a bit of a lurker, as I've been reading and reading for a while, and this is my first post. I'm a musical social butterfly: in addition to being a lifelong singer, I seem to collect instruments and play some, pretend to learn others, and "just gaze at the pretties" for still others. I want to get back into playing fiddle, and money's tight, so here I am. I plan to make a few stick dulcimer/cookie tin canjos to work out kinks first, then try a CBF. My end goal is a 5-string fiddle, but I haven't decided if I'll do a 2- &/or 4-stringer first.

I'm gathering up tools for the new "habit": my partner and I have a few standard power tools in the workshop, and I've picked up a miter box for scarf joints, a peghole reamer, a peg shaver, and am working on sharpening up the chisels. I hope to start (and post pics of) my first build in progress soon!
I Am Blaming All of You with YouTube Channels.tag:www.cigarboxnation.com,2023-09-23:2592684:Topic:37983262023-09-23T10:27:25.217ZThomas "Duck" Petryhttps://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/ThomasPetry

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain dulcimers, diddly bows, canjos and "strumstick" type instruments. I am primarily a bass player but stringed instruments of all types hold a fascination for me.

And then the injury happened. I sustained nerve damage in my left arm that would no longer allow me to fret anything. my had was useless. I had surgery but it has taken 10 years to get back where I am now playing simple walking bass lines on a short scale bass. Until recently, I had pretty much given up playing again. The short scale has proven to be a positive experience for me though, even if I am a bit rusty.

And then somehow..... It must have been Shane sensing a disturbance in the force or something....... I stumbled across I don't know how many hundreds of YouTube videos about CBGs. Building, playing, more building, tips on pickup selections and placement. Diddly Bows, Canjos, Dulcimers...... I was overwhelmed with all of the videos and the variety of characters playing and making these instruments. I watch nothing but CBG videos for 2 straight days.

And I thought..... I could play one of those!

So me being totally worthless in a workshop, I ordered one from CBG Workshop on Etsy. (See pic below) It is a wonderful little instrument. Tuned in G-D-G. Very well put together and has a nice tone. But in MY hands, it is apparently a potato. I figured my hands were just not dexterous enough to work with the smaller string and fret spacing yet. OK..... I'll take up slide playing. Unfortunately, 99% of the videos that I have found still involve some finger work even when playing with a slide.

So does anyone know of really good videos that are 100% slide playing with no finger work? I plan to work on that as well but it would be nice to hear something coming out of this wonderful little box besides the screeches and squawks I'm making with it.

In the meantime.... I'm still blaming you guys and your YouTube channels for sucking me back in.
New CBG Buildertag:www.cigarboxnation.com,2023-09-08:2592684:Topic:37957922023-09-08T16:42:30.591ZThomas "Duck" Petryhttps://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/ThomasPetry

Hello...I'm new to the forums and new to cigar box guitar building. In the last month, I've completed two guitars and really enjoyed the process. I'm not sure I'm going to enjoy learning to play them, though. I've been playing six string acoustic guitar for about 20 years now and really enjoy playing my Larrivee OM-3. That being said, I do want to learn to play some blues/slide on the second CBG I made. I plan to find some lessons online.

Here's the first one. I bought the neck (with fret slots cut in) and fret wire and did the frets myself. It's got some good volume. I used tung oil on the neck/fingerboard. I went with a "zero" fret for the nut. I didn't "dress the frets" -- do I need to, or only if I'm having issues with buzzing or something else?

Here's the second one. I was at an antique store and found the box and the aluminum strainer. I used red oak for the neck and fingerboard (staining the fingerboard ebony). This has a nice sound. The box is a bit big -- I'm thinking of playing it in my lap. I bought a slide for it. I just need to place fret markers on the neck. I broke about four strings trying to get the high G (tuned to open G) tuned. Finally bought a set of guitar strings and was able to get it done.

Hello everyone.

i joined CBN almost a decade ago but never really got involved with the site. Now that I’m building CBGs and other cigar based crafts again I figured it was time to learn from this community of experts.

Looking forward to being a bit more involved this time around so thanks for having me!

Hi all. Over the years I've built a cigar box, an acoustic uke, and many electric guitars. Recently I saw a video of a band (Homemade Jamz Blues Band) that uses muffler guitars built by their Dad, so I figured I had to try making one.

It turned out pretty good (but heavy) and plays just fine. Sound even echos out the pipes.

I'd be interested in hearing from others who have made a muffler guitar, and their experiences.
