How to shoulder rest for cigar box violin?

YOu guys have been great helping me with fret markers.  I just finished a cigar box violin, using a modification of the Steve Miller violin,  I would like to have an adjustable shoulder rest but I am not sure how to go about it.  A sponge would probably be the simplest, but I would prefer not to have rubber bands around the cigar box.  Any Ideas.

  • You might have to do some scratch fabricating there Paul. This one is tricky and lends itself toward a lot of personal preference.

Keep in mind the goal is traditionally not to mute the top or back surface, and to support the instrument fully so the left (presumably) hand doesnt have to support the instrument. Most I have seen really dont seem to be comfort oriented, and that has always puzzled me.

I have not yet built a CB fiddle, but have studied many designs and put some thought into the idea. It might happen yet!

I would consider creating some kind of bracket that attached to the sides and/or end of the box maybe.

Anyway, you might get some ideas asking and browsing in THIS GROUP. Diane and a few others have built some pretty nice, well thought out examples. Tell em' I sent ya!

    • Thanks, for the the reply, I will post the request on the group you suggested.  If you get any inspirations let me know.  I will post a picture of the violin as soon as I figure out how to do it.  I am not good with the computer.
