what sort of bowl will make a good single resonator? Should it ring with a high cymbal like tone or is the tinny clank of a can lid more suitable? How does a proper cone sound when it's out of the guitar?

Hi, I'm new to this site...and the idea of guitar building, and I am very impressed with all of your creations, ideas, etc. I'm looking to build my first cigar box guitar resonator guitar over the holidays when I go home (my dad build's custom cabinets and has all the tools). My question is regarding resonators. What can I use for the resonator? I know the bottom has to be metal, does the top cover need to be metal as well? Any tips, tricks, etc you can provide would be greatly appreciated. thanks all.

yep mike tuna cans,wanted to use aluminum ones but couldnt find a box deep enough. so with this set up its louder than a single can reso.i believe it would be worth the effort to build a box to fit 3 aluminum cans in cause i know they would project more volume due to the fact that they are deeper and they are aluminum. that will be a future project to consider.

Cool! Are those Tuna cans? I thought that canned lobster tins or steak and kidney pie tins would make good rsos's.

built a few more resonators, here is a four string with a chevy hubcap inside the box.

i really like this cigar box.

thanks mike,i really like building reso,s. hope you post some pics of your reso,s so i can check them out.looked at your other builds on yer page,nice work,looking like they play real well. my project today is an arturo fuente king B internal aluminum center hubcap resonator. just got strings on it after 10 hours time but only worked on it 6 or so hours of the time. progress pics are on the photo page.
