Hey Bluesheart hows it going? I hope all is well.  I really have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to playing.... Particularly the bass part I am figuring it out on the fly. That being said I still think its worth while to record your efforts. It gives you a chance to really hear what you are producing. Its also a really good tool for helping develop the song.  Garage Band is the perfect answer for those of us that aren't quite ready for a band.  It's pretty easy to use once you get going. I have been surprised with my results using just the mic on the laptop... how lo-fi is that. thanks again for your kind words - jim

Hey Jim, the video you posted was great. Nice playing and sound quality. That bass really filled it out nicely.

Thanks Mark I'll check it out...might end up being part of both. Of course I still want to learn as much as I can about the tricks in Garage Band as well as lo-budget recording in general. So there may just need to be two groups but I am open to anything....

Hey folks,

Just a quick note, want to include anyone interested in whats going on over at the "other" recording group. It is all inclusive and topics are certainly overlapping with whats going on here and vice-versa. I simply chose that group because its not Garage Band specific, certainly not to exclude anyone!

I have begun a tutorial section that will continue to evolve, and we are sharing a bunch of MP3s to jam to, record with, whatever suits your fancy!

Please come check it out and feel free to contribute tracks, knowledge, questions, whatever!

Hey CBJ nice to see you here, cool little track! ( i would have never guessed it was you) anyway it has already been mentioned but there is a pretty cool channel over on YouTube called GarageBand and beyond. Lewin does a nice job using GarageBand if you haven't seen his 3 videos on editing, you might find them useful.  I am new at all of this playing and recording stuff but garage band works well for the lofi lotech sound I am after. while I have bought some of the equipment that Lewin mentions I have also had good results using just the mic on my mac.  Please do let us know how you get along.   Maybe if you don't mind sharing what you used to record the track with. What guitar, was that a drum track in GB  etc. That might help new guys like me as well....You can tell on my stuff I am trying to figure it out on the fly. I am finding that playing along with Garage Band and the different tracks it is helping me improve my playing and developing my ear... Coll that we are starting to see some more comments here, it will be nice to see where this goes. We haven't even touch on the video side of this yet (garageband is part of ilife which includes iMovie) it's all fun....Hope to see some videos from you guys as well. Take care - Jim

Hi good people...I have not got a clue what I am doing with recording stuff...but I've spent an hour trying to do something...here it is..alubox resonator 3 string recorded using the built-in computer mic. and mangled with GarageBand....Aint%20right.mp3

Chongolio, Thanks for the comments. I am primarily a builder, lately it has been easier for me to carve out time to play and work on recording. 

I have been a fan of Garageband and Beyond for a long time.  (ever since I bought my mac) I have also found Lewin's comments on Video song equipment very helpful. My goal is to keep everything pretty lo-fi so I don't really have anything in the way of the signal. I have used the mic in the Mac with good results. On this recording I used a CAD E70 (a Lewin recommendation, just make sure you have phantom power) for the acoustic and the reso. I went direct into the computer for the bass using  the Reggae bass setting... (It was easier then dragging out a bass amp). While on the subject of the bass. It's just one string an 1 1/2 oak dowel drilled into a cigar box. A friend of mine wound a pickup (but I am thinking a Piezo would also work) and I used a screw eye for the tuner. The price is right and I think it adds to the mix. I like playing it and with more practice who knows. 

 I think what I learned playing around on this video will be a good spring board for getting down what I want on the next one. TIme will tell if people want to pick up on this group. I am certainly open to talking about this pretty cool software.   Take care Jim

Cool song and video Jim. Nicely executed. I for one would be interested in getting this group plugged back in and amped up. I have been mucking around quite a bit in Garageband and imovie for sometime and attempting some home recordings most with my didley bows and ukulele.

I have a lot of questions about garageband and home recording but sometimes get a bit overwhelmed with all the choices available and the best way to use all the filters and effects available. So a lot of the time I end up with musical mud. Although I did find Luwin's videos at http://www.YouTube.com/Garagebandandbeyond very helpful particularly the ones where he remixed somebody else's song and his primer on building a begginers studio. One of the most valuable pieces of information I found was getting as much stuff as possible out of your signal chain before pluggin into your audio interface. I now try to use as much of the built in effects as possible and have cut out most of my other pedals when recording. My sound has never been really dialed in as far as my amps and pedals go and I usually had quite a bit of his and noise when I did record when recording with external gear. 

But enough of my rambling, Thanks for jump starting this group Jim let see if we can keep it running for awhile

I don't know how active this group is anymore.....But in an effort to get some dialog going from those of you that use GB here is my first attempt at using GB and iMovie to create a video. I am learning everything as I go. Playing, singing, filming recording and editing.  The first big lesson I picked up on  is the importance of keeping track of your takes. I didn't pay attention and lost some video resulting in real issues syncing the audio with the video.  I decided to go with the footage I had and start working with Imovie.  It was a pretty good learning experience. Next time should be better. One other point is the exercise of putting this together is helping me improve across the board. Not to mention I am having a better time with my music. All of the instruments used in this were built with Cigar Box guitars in the video. I am really liking the one string bass.
