Welcome to the addiction Rich. Madgomer is dead on in his reply, but if you want some measurements as a starting point these are my recommendations. I'm assuming your neck is a standard 1 x 2 (an inch and a half wide.) Place your middle string dead in the middle, and place your outside strings 3/16 of an inch in from the edge of the fret board. String height depends on if your guitar is fretted or fretless. If it's fretted, I recommend a string height of something like 40 to 60 thousandths of an inch from the top of the fret to the bottom of the string. I find that high enough to be able to play slide, but still low enough to finger the notes comfortably. If it's fretless you can, and probably should, go quite a bit higher.. With experience you will be able to dial in these measurements to what suits you.best.

Rich, depends on personal preference, hand size, and the style of playing you plan for the instrument. More string height impacts intonation and makes it harder to play unless you are mainly thinking slide. Tell us a little more about your preferences and do you currently playing a stringed instrument?

Hi all. I am building my first 3 string CBG. The thing that is puzzling me now is STRING HEIGHT and STRING SPACING. Any advice? Are there any rules of 'thumb' I should be following Cheers

Piling on to Taffy's comment, a piezo pickup (rod or disk) will operate off the vibration of whatever it is attached to, rather than the strings, so it's more likely to reflect the characteristics of the sign you're using than a mag pickup would.

Hi Ron, if you use magnetic pickups they convert the string vibrations into sound, not the top material.

So you’re trying to cancel out that resonater effect? I would use a block of wood down the center, make it touch area under the plate at the bridge, it’ll cancel out the tinny vibration? If you run it through length of the body, you’ll have a spot to anchor your pickups, just cut the plate so the wires don’t touch or better yet, tape the sides so they can’t contact the plate? Good luck on this :)

starting a customer build .What pickups work with metal signs  about the same as a license plate thickness. Wanting to avoid a banjo sound

Well thank you all for the input. The problem has been isolated to the amp cord itself. It is not consistently making a good connection inside the sleeve that enters the CBG. Of course when I tested it with another guitar, it worked. When I tried the CBG, it stopped. Apparently I give up too easily. With a bit of fiddling and inspection of the solder points inside the plug sleeve, we found the issue. A new solder joint and the CBG sounds awesome! I can't play at all... but I feel like I could do a concert right now. Thanks again for the help.
