Drew and Corey,

nice first efforts... I know that you both learned a lot and have a lot to try on the next one.... But I'd also hope that you play these enough to start to get on with playing slide... it will open a whole new world to you.....

Just finished my first instrument, a simple slide diddley bow for my 5 year old girl. She likes it, and I learned a lot making it. The sound coming from it is nicer than I thought. I'd like to spend some time shaping the neck more sometime.

Hi,
Having played around with bigger boxes to house a resonator cone I quickly realised how uncomfortable bigger boxes are to play - acoustic guitars are rounded like a pear shaped lady so they sit nicely on your lap and you can get an arm over the waist to play. Big square boxes are like trying to play a suitcase - fine if that is what you want, but I was surprised at how only a small increase in depth or width dramatically reduces playability. Before hacking any boxes I would tie or tape them together to see how the bigger volume feels when in a playing position. I find a box about 12 x 9 x 21/2 inches feels great my reso at 13 x101/2 x 21/2 inches is starting to not quite sit right and above this size I find too difficult to play. For a bigger sound and tone control I would consider adding a pickup.

I often have to resort to using more than one box as big boxes are so difficult to get here. Given that most boxes have very nice ornate lids which are carefully fitted to the box sides, but plain bottom which are just tacked on, why not easily remove the bottoms of two boxes and glue them together bottom-to-bottom. One of the lids will then become the sound-board of the CBG and the other lid will be the back.
