Wood for Neck Bowed

I stopped by Home Depot yesterday and as I perused the hardwood section, my heart skipped a beat when I saw dark mahogany of appropriate sizes for building cbg's.  I settled down however when I tried to find a piece that was not bowed...some a little bowed, especially the 4' pieces, some with a double bow...8' pieces.  Anyone ever have success straightening out some of these babies?

  • Hey Phil, I ordered a mahogany 6 foot 1x2 from Home Depot earlier this year. It was right around $20 with shipping. The piece I got was near perfect. It's on my favorite, goto git.

    • That's hopeful.  Perhaps I need to check some more Home Depots...maybe I'll find a straight piece.  I think there's 3 in my county.  Thanks

    • I ordered it online, and they delivered to my house.

    • Hmmm, I guess I can return it if it's crooked.

    • Yeah, I got a nice, straight piece. I wasn't to sure what to expect, but they sent me a good piece

    • Perhaps the advantage of having it delivered - would they want to face an upset customer holding a bent piece of wood? Have to remember this - have it delivered.
    • Sounds like it's worth a try. No other source of it around here.

  • See if you can find someone with a Jointer, that is the tool made to do the job. Milling the wood to make it flat will go a long ways to it staying flat. Internal stress caused it to bow, the memory is in there. Planing it flat would be best.
    • I'll do that, thanks

  • If this option works for you - I found a mill just outside Toronto that milled a nice cherry board I picked out to produce 8 necks - the cost was the same as getting oak from Home Depot - if you can find straight pieces. They have cupped a touch but sanding them down against a flat table surface touches them up. Built 2 and working on 3 more right now.
