Tuners etc, new builder.

I am contemplating my first build and would like some ideas for the tuners. I intend to build a simple cbg, 3 string fretless. Besides using guitar tuners what can be made from old stuff into a workable tuner machine? Also would a piece of mahogany be good for the neck? I happen to have a good sized piece laying around. Thanks for the input I'm sure I will have more questions.

  • look at the photos... lots of non Cigar Box builds.... it's the spirit of taking what you go and building a playable musical instrument.

I have a box of recycled cello pegs that may get a workout if I decide to enter. I've used them in basses with alternative string material (weedwacker line and polyurethane cord) and they work just fine (as long as you ream the hole with a matching taper)....

    good luck,

Thanks for the replies. What about good old fashioned friction peg tuners? Can they be made to stay in tune? If I can get my act together I may make one to fit into this months contest, it is what I was thinking anyway.
One more question, if you use a box other than a cigar box will it still fit into the CBG world? I don't have a box yet but there is a wine shop close by that may be a good source.

  • For samples and some enthusiasm about eye-bolt tuners, check out Crow's page.
  • mahogany fine for the neck.... look at pics... a lot of guys tell what they used.... You can use other things for tuners (eye bolts, old viola pegs, etc.) but hardly worth the hassle. If you want an old vibe, go to a guitar repair shop and dig into their junk box for a set of mis-matched tuners.

let us see what you do....
