Truss rods should be installed at 2:00 on Tuesday afternoons. Seriously, I don't bother unless I have six strings.

speaking of truss rods, when do I have to install them? (like when the string tension is to much)

  • This is just my 3rd build though, and the ipe was free so I took what I could get. plus, I have no idea about installing truss rods and stuff like that so I need a thick chunk of hardwood so I can make it a simple neck thru
  • If you're going to regularly build CBGs with wound pups, it would be a good idea to learn how to build a good bolt-on neck design so that the majority of the box is open and you don't need to carve into the neck thru....

So do I just screw the current neck onto the new chunk of wood inside the box and be done with it? or, is there a "better" way to do it?
  • Ipe is a very dense wood and makes a great fingerboard. I think I'd make the neck of something a bit thicker, glue the Ipe on as the fingerboard.  Something that contrasts with the Ipe in color would be striking (pun intended) and give the rigidity you need.  Even tho the Ipe is dense and hard, at 1/4 inch thickness of the entire neck would eventually give it the bends.

  • Thanks/ I got a thick chunk of some type of wood to stick in there. I would've have probably needed one anyway since I'm gonna put a single coil in it instead of a piezo.
  • listen to  mike... I would think a minimum of 1/2 inch thick neck section and then only on a three or four stringer and will a good hardwood...(no poplar)...

  • Do you mean its only 1/4 inch inside the box? If so yes it will need to be thicker to keep from bowing. 3/4" is about right for the thru neck portion in my builds. You may be able to get away with 1/2".

Another Neck Question: Like I said, I have some brazzilian Ipay for the neck. I built the box so the soundboard is 1/4" thick. It's neck through, and the section that goes under the lid is also 1/4" thick. It's gonna have 3 strings tuned GDG and the gauges are 32, 24, & 16. do you think the neck will be strong enough or will I need to get a re-enforicing chuck of wood to go inside the box? ( it has no truss rod and by the way, I used a 1/4" roundover bit to round out the back of the neck and it turned out great)
