Resonator Cones

I have finished my second resonator build.  I used a 5.5" cone on the first one and thought it sounded great. My 2nd one I used an Old Lowes cone and cover plate.  There is no comparison.  The first build's cone was of heavier gauge and didn't transfer the vibrations like the Lowes cone does. The thickness of the Lowes cones seems to me about the same as a cheap beer can.  Very thin!  However the sound with or without an amp is incredible.  The new one sounds a lot like a banjo on the high g string.  It has a very nice ring to it. Some might find that offensive, but for me......I like it.  If you plan on building a reso I would highly recommend the cones from Lowes.

  • I got mine from Charles Atkinson. Supposedly something is wrong with them (he was selling them at a deal... as-is because the cones didn't pass his Quality Control). I think it looks and sounds fine comparably.

    • That is the kind I used on my first one.  Trust me, the Lowe's cone sounds better.

    • You get the Lowe's Cones from Gitty?
    • Yes I  did.

  • Thnaks for that Bill,

I have a cat feeding bowl and was only thinking this morning that I need to make a resonator out of it.

Any chance you could post sound clips of both your resonators, acoustic and amped so we can hear the difference.

    Thanks

    Denis

    • Do the cat bowl thing anyway, it sounds odd/strange/metallic/unique. I love the sound that jumps out of mine. What's good to note is that the saddle and bridge is the key to eq response from the thing. I settled on two dice with a sawn bolt but had to super glue the threaded bolt body to the two dice to eliminate bridge rattle/zing.

      Get stuck in!

    • I don't know how to post sound clips.........not good at this computer stuff.  More of a hands on builder type guy.
