removing a bad fret

When building I pressed in one of my frets (the seventh) too far into the wood, so about 1/3 of the fret (the part on the 1 and 2nd strings) is too low, so it kinda buzzes on the next fret (the eigth).  I am afraid to try to "pull it out" and put it in again, as pulling/prying it out seems like it woudl damage the fretboard ?  Any thoughts?

  • Saw a you tube video on classic 6 string repair yesterday where the guy (who seemed to be a guitar repair pro) used a soldering iron to set on on side of the fret to heat it up.  This was supposed to loosen the wood up and less damage to fretboard. Then, he had the "close cut" type nippers,  and then used it to clamp on to edge of fret and slowly worked it out.  look at about the 2:30 mark of the vid.

  • You COULD re-level & re-crown all the other frets..tho lots of work. Or you could carefully pull the bad fret, fill the slot with filler, sand, re-slot & reinstall the fret. Ideally, using a depth stop on your fret saw will keep this from happening. Good luck!
