I've been lurking for quite some time and doing tons of research to get ready for my diving into my projects. Could anyon help me with locating some of the following items? 1) sound hole rings - the tarp rings or whatever else folks are using. 2) cheap resonator cones/biscuits - whatever folks are using to create these instruments.... the standard resonator guitar ones seem too large and too pricey.... Those are my biggest needs for now -- I have a lot of other parts and boxes, etc and am ready to go with several projects. I just need a few more items that I have listed above and would appreciate any help that folks here can provide. thanks!

  • Thanks, guys! I have a drill press so I am not too concerned about being able to make small holes.... but I will definitely pick up a set of those bits!

While you are at Lowes, pick up the small set of Forstner bits. Cuts a nice smooth hole.

When it comes to making sound holes, i think the best strategy would be a drill if the holes aren't too large.
im not really sure how you would get a band saw blade into the hole that you'd be making.

Thanks, Nick! I think that I'll probably use grommets as well as the door pulls depending on the project, and if I get good enough with all of my saws, perhaps I won't even want to use the rings anymore except on the resonator guitars. I'm about to jump into practicing on the band saw, scroll saw and drill press that I have in my small wood shop.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate all of the help!

  • Lookin' to do my first build. I'm going to use a stainless steel sink stopper/strainer after pulling off the useful bits I should be left with the ss basket to use as my reso generator. I've watched JimFrets reso build on veoh. If the basket doesn't work; I'll cut the hole larger and use a paint can lid ... I'm set for my first try.
  • Thanks, Wray! I'll definately check some of the items that you mentioned out! It all seems doable and I do have a number of shallow boxes that could work. some of the Padilla and Padron boxes seem like they might be perfect.... thanks much!

Lana, Something I've been toying around with is a tin that you can get at wally world in the candy area at the check out. York mints come in a tin that is 3 1/8'' or so in dia. and 1/2'' deep. On a thin box you wouldn't have to build up too much under the tin for protrusion through the top. If you use the bottom of the tin as I plan to for the reso. it is concaved so it would hold the bridge in place I think. Also they sell cheap guitar strings there also called Crunchies that come in a round tin about 5'' in dia. (they hold 10 C Ds just perfect too) again only about 1/2'' tall so it would be good for a shallow box. Wray

  • Hi Mark! Thanks for the reply and suggestions! Those light reflectors that you can get a home depot could work very well, and the best part is that I actually have a few laying around so I might just experiment and see what I can do with them. I also like the idea of the tin lids and the pet food dishes.... lord knows I have enough of those stuffed in a closed somewhere (well, at least the ones that aren't currently being used for feeding the two living critters in my life!) I'll keep my eye out for some more of the items that you and everyone else has mentioned here and see what I can come up with! Thanks!!!!

About resonator cones...(see my page for pics) I used an aluminum lid for a girl-scout cooking set. It was just right. It's kind of fun to haunt thrift stores for this sort of thing; you have to be able to imagine if it will fit or not.

Aluminum is best, as it takes the least energy to vibrate. Some guys use stainless steel; there's a lot of small bowls, pet bowls, and similar items available.
One thing I thought would work well is the sort of clamp-on aluminum "shop light" they sell for about 10 bucks. These have a spun-aluminum reflector that should be about perfect.
    This sort of thing:
