Neck from Oak Floor Boards

I have some solid oak flooring left over from a project.  If I plane off the grooves and end up with 5/16" x 2" boards I could laminate them together and then make neck from that.

Does anyone have any experience with laminated necks?

Will Titebond work as a glue to keep the boards together?

Any thoughts appreciated.

  • Sounds like this could work then. Maybe next weekend...

    I don't have big hands but I found that playing my Strat kills my wrist and hands. About six months ago I started playing a Epi Dot 335 that has a fatter neck. I don't have near the wrist and hand trouble I did before. So, I think, for me, two laminated together is the way to go.

    ive done it before with oak like you say you end up with 1 1/4 for thickness with two after the groves are gone i used lapages 2800 lb cabnet glue put a thin layer on both surfaces press for few min seperate them for a few more to air then c clamp clean exses glue with wet rag stand for 24 hours then plane away .

  • 5/16'', even with a fretboard, would be too thin for a neck, I'd say?

    Surely you'd need to laminate at least 2 together to give you a 5/8'' (then add a fretboard)?

    I am renowned for over-engineering, but I'd say if you can bend it easily with your hands, you'll bend it easily with your stings, lol
  • If you have a big hand then you might find the thicker neck more comfortable. I think however, you will find the single thickness will be fine particularly if you laminate on a fret board of about 3/16 or 1/4 inch.
  • Laminated necks = very strong
    Titebond = very strong

    Sounds like a good plan to me :-))
  • I thought the thickness would be kind of shallow for a neck and could get a more comfortable profile from two laminated together. Sanding off the finish makes sense.

  • Like you said, just plane the backs and you are all set. I have also planed off the finish as well to get a balanced color in the final finish.
