installing piezo

neck throu the box, tops going to be glued down to ends of neck, cutout in neck so top can vibrate, asuming piezo placement under lid by bridge, should i first put hot glue then piezo then hot glue, or sandwich piezo in wood [ if so inside the piezo sandwich do i add mayo, u know hot glue, silicone or somthing, to one or both sides] then when installing the sandwich do i want the wood of the sandwich directly on the lid underside with out any substance between?, my 1st build, its scary to know once the lid is glued down there's no getting back inside the box for adjustments, would like all the advise i can get before sealing it  up.

  • I attached mine directly to the neck inside the box with duct tape, covering it completely and it worked awesome...I had it attached to the underside of the top, but it kept overdriving really bad...after I attached it to the neck, all that went away...

Hi James, the build im making at the moment is the one I started b-4 getting your kit, I left a space between the lid an neck except for an inch or so on each end so the lid could vibrate, watching your cd, gluing the full lenght of the neck to the lid an install the piezo to the underside of neck would have been easy, an i can see how the lid vibrates the neck an placing the piezo under neck would work.but with the build Im doing I already have the space, dont know if the piezo will work under neck since most of neck is not touching lid? what if I wedged piezo between the lid an neck [in the space] with mouse pad on top an bottom, positioned under bridge? or center of box? on this build, I'm making a seperate fret board to be glued to the neck after lid is sealed an extending over the lid some so no opening up for adjustments unless cutting bottom. whats your opinion. Also do u know any sites I can buy hardware for cbg's

Hi Ty, I'm glad you finally got your kit. All you need to do is glue the neck to the lid with Tite bond wood glue, ( do not use gorilla glue ) after it dries for 6 hours, take the paper off the foam that is on the piezo and stick it on the neck right under the bridge area. ( do not place it between the lid and neck. ) You will be surprised that it picks up on the 3/4" woood neck. if you want you can also place it on the lid next to the neck under the bridge. If you glue the lid down after you are done, just glue the front seam not the sides or back, that way if you ever have to get into it you can use a razor blade or knife and cut the glue, again you titebond wood glue. Good luck Ty.

  • Someone here told me to tack the piezo down with a good glob of hot glue and that did the trick. I applied the glue in a dime size glob to the inside lid (2 places as I had 2 piezos) and pressed the pickup down until about 1/16" gap. None on the top. Makes a great sound now.

  • Everyone's got their fav. way to do this....

I like to CA glue the metal part of the piezo directly to the vibrating surface and then encase the back (ceramic) with either silicone or other cushioning material.... I know you can get a little more box noise (I like the option of "drumming" on my box), but even that is almost elimenated, if you place the piezo between bridge (wooden) and the top...

    just some thoughts,

  • Don't glue the lid down if you don't want to. A few wood screws will hold it nicely, and let you back in if your wires come loose.
  • There are all kinds of ways to do this, on my current build i simply used some 2 sided tape to hold the piezo to the box lid and filled behind it with hot glue, it works great.
