Fret markers on side and front of neck

I hope this hasn't been asked before. I have searched and couldn't find the answer. I see instruments with fret markers on the side of the neck and on the front of the fretboard. If you can see the side ones, why have the big ones on the fretboard? Is it mainly for decoration or are they really useful? If I leave them off (as I would like) and only have the side ones is there a disadvantage?

  • I thought of only including side markers to my neck, still only at the finishing stage though may include front markers as well... the way i play crouched over the neck may still need to rely on them! (-;

  • Hi Groovemeister. Thanks for the comment. I have to admit that now that the frets are in the markers don't really stand out so well. Still, have to see what it looks like once finished. We just keep learning lessons don't we.

  • Hi Wes.

    The markers are in now and I am pleased with how they look. What are the other (non-copper) fret markers on yours?

    Hi.

    Just as a little update. I have put in the side fret markers. Not going to have any on the front of the fretboard itself. Thanks to all for the info and advice.

    I used copper ring main cable. Stripped the insulation off and straightened the wire. Drilled the marker holes just under the size of the wire and filed a very slight taper on the end of the wire. Pushed it in, snipped it off with a little still showing above the wood, hammered it down and filed it off.

    I will post a pic tomorrow if work permits.

  • I like as many road signs as I can find when playing---especially when learning a new instrument.  I think of the side markers as being for me while the fretboard is for decoration and for relationship to the chord when needed.  The 3 and 5 especially can be used in a diatonic mode when using a 3 or 4 string instrument, much like a diatonic dulcimer.
  • Cool baby. Go fer it.

    Hi Pat, Groovemeister and Wes.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Pat. I understand what you mean, but as a beginner I think it will be a very long time before I play in company so I don't expect to be confusing anyone.

    Wes. I looked at the markers you make and they look very good. What an excellent idea. I was planning to make side markers using pins made from ring main cable as I have a bit of a copper fetish. I have copper rivets for the strings to run through and I want to make the nut out of copper as well.

    Anyway, thanks again for the help.

  • I burnt the markers on the side with a soldering iron. Lovely smell with oak! ;-)
