First CBG

Hey All,     Great to part of the CBG group.  I just started my 1st attempt at a CBG- it's going to be a resonator type with one of Old Lowe's cones. Have been doing a lot of reading on designs, etc. I have a question for you guys- do I make it a solid box around the resonator or can I leave it open as possible? I would think I wound get better sound acoustics leaving it open. I am however putting in a pup to give it more possibilities but would like it to be loud enough to use mostly without.

Any thoughts???                                                                             Jim

  • Update on my resonator build. Emailed Old Lowe-agrees, leave it open. Got the cone and noted it 7.25 in. across- I thought it was gonna be 6. My CB is 7.75 in across, so this made for a really tight fit- also the box I got is really choice and I hate to cut out such a large part of the character----So-----I decided to did thru my workshop and found a really nice 1/2" slab of bald cypress(14X36"). I planed it down to 1/4" and made my own box(10X15"). I've been working mainly on my neck now(red oak from my place with eucalyptus fretboard)- so far so good.306320099?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

  • I'll be watching this build, too. :)

  • I left my box open, and it turned out fine. You can take a look at my page for pictures of the building stage.
  • No suggestions as I have not built one yet. I am about to start my first from scratch. After AI get a couple done I hope to do the resonator box so I will keep tabs on how yours goes.
