Earthing Strings

G'day all, I'm nearly finished my fist magnetic pickup build, & have read all about earthing the strings - not exactly necessary but highly recommended from what I gather. My soldering is pretty bad so I was wondering if this would work - running a wire from the jack to the tail piece using electrical conectors. If not, then I guess I'd better start practicing my soldering! ( Tried to include a pic but it dosent seem to work). Cheers!

  • Thanks for all the replys guys, much appreciated! They are a crimp style connector so it will be a tight fit. Seem to have worked out a pic too...!

    • That’ll do it? :D

    • Cool! Cheers mate!

  • The biggest problem in soldering is not cleaning the terminals, wire, and iron. Use a stiff bristled brush and clean everything with alcohol, then don't touch it with your fingers. You will be surprised how well the solder flows.

    • I always use a touch of flux.

  • That would work, just make sure the wire has the tightest fit possible in the connectors or you’ll get some noise. Grounding the strings is very necessary & a given, 60 cycle hum will drive you mad! Don’t fret about your soldering skills, nobody’s perfect right off, it’s like everything else, it needs practice. But don’t let it hold you back, hone your skills on old/burnt parts, practice makes perfect. Cheers :)

  • ChickenBoneJohn has a good video on grounding strings on YouTube...
