I just finished my first CBG and was devastated when I strung it up. The action and intonation are off to where it is pretty much unplayable. Tuned it to a D-G-B-E to begin with and the intonation from open to the 12 fret on the D is off about a 1/4 of a step but the G is almost dead on, then the B is off like the D and the E is almost dead on.

Hmm, that seems odd, as though you have different scale lengths for each string. What did you use for the nut and the bridge? Maybe the depth of slots in one or both is irregular?

I do have a theory: if your nut is fairly "thick" (like a 1/4" piece of red oak or something) and the slots you filed in it aren't perfectly level (especially if some are slanted "down" toward the fingerboard), then you could see this behavior: essentially, the scale length is different for such slots than for "level" slots. My current build is actually doing this now: I will be replacing the nut tonight.

The other thing that I have a problem with is the action. In open position it sounds and feels great but the box I used has a beveled top. While the neck is glued flat to the top, the bevel causes the strings to be raised and the action is about 3/4" off the fretboard at the 9th fret. any ideas?? I did some things really well on this guitar and am pleased with how it looked, but I have some issues to work out. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar issue with the beveled top on my son's doodle bass: there I chiseled / sanded a gouge into the top to stop the bevel from "fretting" the strings when my son plays up high. I have taken to using fingerboards which "float" above the neck to cover such breaks now.

hey Dave check out my profile page ... i got links to some great vids..one that may be helpful is the Macanudo build from Jim Farris. i used that one to help me when i first started...its about 48 minutes long.Another great vid is Bill Jehle's How to build a Guitar The string , stick and box method. He sells it on Ebay for about 15 or 20 bucks i think. That is one well worth the investment...very detailed build and easy to follow.I also used this one to help me get started.

Shane ,That sounds great but my comp. won't play U-tube an such . I'am still on dial-up,So I miss a lot of good stuff out there because of that.Don't know if its the comp. or I need to do some thing to get it to work. I can't aford to up grade to cable etc. It loads for about 3 -4 mins. then plays for 4- seconds , loads for 3-4 mins then plays for 4-seconds all the way threw. any help or ideas would really help...
