building a cbg '01--precursor to101

hi nation

i've got 7 cbg's to my credit and still learning.  now i've put my foot in my mouth.  i volunteered to show a group of scouts and a church  youth group how to build a guitar.  now the hunt for parts.  the local harware store has donated 25 1x2's for the necks and all the eye boltss and hardware for the bridge, nuts, tuners and a couple cheap cordless drills.  i'm saving $$$ to come up with 25 sets of strings for the 3 stringers.  my problem is i'm disabled and can't drive--besides the nearest city with a smoke shop is 60 miles away.  i need an out let for CHEAP boxes as i'll have to get them too.  my social security is not much so's i'm limited on cash.  any suggestions or donation?.  after seeing crows 1 hour build, i think i can take 2 groups of 12 through it in 1 1/2 to 2 hours.  either way fun will be had by all and maybe  the hook will be set in their minds about cbg's.   thanks in advance.  oh by the way the plans are to do this in early january.  they wanted it b4 christmas but my funds would allow it.

Just found your thread and I'm thrilled with your work with kids.  Can't help with the boxes this time, just starting my first cbg (actually using a cookie tin for this one) but as the boxes start to build up----I know they will, parts have built up from everything else I've tried like that---maybe I can contribute.  The TV stations will send people for the special needs things, or you can get someone to video it and send it in, and if the school board/principal will allow pics or videos (usually needs specific permission for each kid) that's a killer for the nearest newspaper no matter how far away it is.  I know you're doing it for the kids, but some publicity can make it easier to do even more with the schools and help groups by getting donations of supplies.  I've got friends who have a special needs son who is in the newspaper several times a year with special benefit type activities and every time an article prints, the helping group gets a boost in interest, volunteers and publicity to attract more kids that benefit from the event.   Not ragging on you, just trying to add to what others have said to encourage you to keep on keeping on.

    Mark,

I sent 5 more boxes Fed Express. You should have them before new year's. Post photos of the finished CBG's with the kids, and I'll send more.

  • i'm getiing as much prepped and pacaging everything into each box.  not a lot of actual cutting, etc, by the kids because of safety per school but still a lot of work for them.  scheduled for the second week in jan.  will keep everyone postedf

Mark, this is fantastic. Would you mind writing up what you've learned? I'm going to be doing the same in a couple months and would love to stand on your shoulders as I do, learning from your mistakes and successes. W. Sam, sounds like you've done this too, but I didn't find your thread when I searched. Not sure why. Would you mind pointing me to so I can learn from you too if you see this?

    Thank you both!

You should bump this up a notch. Contact your local TV news station. Scouts and Church Groups may not be much of a story, but if you're working with special needs kids, there's a REAL story. If they send someone over with a camera to do a "human interest story" your NEXT problem might be where to store the boxes people keep sending you. Heck, contact your local newspaper too, though they won't be able to record the kids learning music. Give it some thought.

  • that would be great sam

kids won't fight for the purdyist box.

    thanks again
