bolt on neck and neck angle

I have made a few neck thru cbg's, but now want to do a 4 string 17" scale Uke.  I think i also want to add metal strings, not just nylon.  Anyway, I would prefer to do a bolt on neck, but am worried about attatching it securely.  And, do I have to beef up the box in addition to where the neck bolts (as the box will need to support stress from the neck to the bridge where strings attach?  Any thoughts/pics appreciated.  If I must I can do a neck thru, but thought it may be time to move on to a new technique.

Also, separately, on a neck thru, what is best way to get a good neck angle?  I tried on my last to just put some 2degree shims but didn't work too good.  Thanks all!

  • Basically yes, you will need to beef up the box. The git I'm working on now is attached with hanger bolts. If you jump to the 7:00 min mark on this video (not me), you can see what I'm talking about.

  • Do you still want the acoustic twang? If so you can partially fill the cgb. This would be a semi hollow. A full width block at the tail of the box, and two 3/4" boards from towards the neck pocket location. At the neck pocket, I recommend filling this completely, and then rout it out. Attach this support structure and bolt.the neck through. I use a thickness of approximately 1" remaining. Also invest in solid brass threaded inserts for the neck. After using these on my latest build, I have found them to provide a solid and slightly adjustable connection. If you need to set the neck at an angle for some reason you will be able to make the adjustment. Good luck my friend.
