I saw something the other day that qued my interest. If you capo a regular guitar at the fifth fret you basically have a uke. So.... if I saw a fret board at the fifth fret and put the bridge the same distance it would be on a full size scale will it be a uke?

Thanks

So, I have been building Cigar Box Guitars, Canjos, Dulcijos, and Diddley Bows for a few years now. I wanted to try my hand at a Ukulele.

I found a tenor uke maple neck with a pre-fretted rosewood fretboard for cheap. I bought an actual bone nut and bridge with a rosewood saddle. I bought generic set of nylon uke strings.

I bolted on the neck, glued the fretboard, and put it all together with dual piezos under the bridge, a jack and volume pot.
I can not get the strings to tune to GCEA (mainly getting the high string to A). The tension is to high getting it to F (let alone A) I am not sure the problem.

Also, I filed the nut and bridge. Intonation is now close (less than a quarter step sharp at 12th compared to harmonic). Harmonics are dead on, but first fret is off (as if strings are still too high and I am fretting them sharp). I'm afraid to go too low. The strings rest about 3cm above the fretboard at the first fret and about 5cm at the 12th fret.

Any assistance and advice would be great. Gitty and others in YouTube make this look so easy (especially for someone like myself who this isn't my first CBG build). It went together rather easily/quickly, but isn't quite what it seems. ideal narrow of the box?tag:www.cigarboxnation.com,2017-09-03:2592684:Topic:29364162017-09-03T17:08:45.602Zgary sheldonhttps://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/0d3jt6c98794o

I've got a new concert scale ukulele with magnetic pickup and so find myself in need of string advice. Can you help? I'm looking for strings that will work on a 15inch scale length and that will also be picked up by the pickup. Good news, I've figured out that nylon strings aren't suitable lol. If you can give some advice I'd really appreciate it as an hour of searching has me still scratching my head. If you can recommend a brand and particular item number /type then even better. I rang a music shop to see if their titanium strings would work and after a bit of a giggle from them was told that the pickup wouldn't read them and I need nickel wound. Only, I can't find any nickel wound ukulele strings anywhere.

Hi all, I am trying to sort out my latest build, a 21" scale ubass. I used Thundergut strings, but they don't seem right. The lower strings are very slack, I can't seem to raise the strings enough to get them to stop buzzing on the frets. The higher strings seem quite taunt but still buzz. Can someone share a proper nut and bridge height for these strings? I found a reference to a 5mm height at the 12 fret but how do I balance that at each end?

"Have you ever that the world is a tuxedo, and you are a pair of brown shoes?" George Gobel once said this to Johnny Carson, and it is the best way I know to describe the CBU builders in a CBG world! We have started a facebook group to combat the idea that all cigar boxes that have necks are guitars! The ukulele lends itself perfectly to the cigar box instrument movement just based on the visual scale alone! It just looks correct! The box gives the uke strings a nice harp tone as well, and there are no slides or special tunings required! Any guitar player can easily pick one up and start playing something, especially with the assistance of tabs or charts! So it is to you, my brethren, that I say "join our group and let the world see that we are not alone in our quest to ROCK THE BOX!!

Hey everybody, I am building a concert scale pot lid reso uke, with a piezo pickup. My string ends will show thru the tail piece. So ball end strings may be the ticket. Can anyone recommend steel wrapped nylon strings that will tune like a uke? Also, string gauges that will tune like a uke. I intend to play like a uke but may set it up for slide playing. All ya'lls thoughts are welcomed. jh

I'm in the early stages of building a solid body electric uke. It's in the style of a Stratocaster. I'm debating whether to go with steel strings and put in a mag pup or use nylon strings with a piezo rod pup in the saddle. Just wondering about the sound differences.

Obviously, the mag pup will give it more of a Strat look, but I could easily fake the look also.

So... I go this idea really way too late last Christmas. I was going to make my brother a Uke. I have been toting a Cigar Box around for a few years that I got from a shop in Alexandria. I always wanted to make a uke out of it, but I just didn't have the motivation. I thought if I gave myself a deadline, I would actually crank it out.

I didn't realize the time I would really need to spend to finish the thing... Lol.

I shot pics all along the way, and I thought I would share them here. I will try not to stall out half way through. Some of my stumbles might help others is what i figure.

The first shots are of the scarf joint for the neck and head stock. I have had the idea for the head stock design for a while. Basically a slightly modified "classical" head. The wood is from a high school basket ball floor that was probably put down in the 60's some time. It was chopped into sections and sold at a local wood shop for 4 bucks a sheet. I probably bought too much... A little cleaning and it is pretty nice Rock Maple. Some with some pretty sweet figuring!

I did some basic shaping on the belt sander after I stacked up the heel (sorry no pics of the heel being glued). I really wanted to retain the 'floor' feel of some of the pieces, so I didn't fill in the ribs on the bottom of the floor pieces. A friend of mine recommended marine epoxy for the joints. I regret that now for the scarf joint as it shows more than I wanted.
