Good article on pickup simulation from AMZ-FX, written by guitar electronics guru Jack Orman. Basically you can use any pickup, simple enough right? He even makes reference to CBG’S & 3 pole CBG…Continue

Hello everybody!Thought I'd drop these nuggets for anyone looking to wire (3) P90s into their guitars.First, the middle pickup must be reverse-wound, meaning you would wind the pickup clockwise. The…Continue

Guys, after assembling yet another 3 stringer with one pick up, one volume pot, and one tone pot, something is amiss. Have never had this issue before. Static noise is heard when the guitar is…Continue

Sorry I wasnt clearer on that Colin!
The described use of the clip is as a heat sink. Clipped onto the lead between component and iron it helps disipate some heat so the component is less likely to take the brunt of it and be damaged.
The problem with low powered irons in my opinion is that you have to applie heat for such a long period it is heating up the surrounding parts excessively. Most little irons are fine for joining wires, but dont work well for such jobs as tinning the back of a pot, or soldering leads to the housing.
I have not tried a tone pot only, no reason it wont work, but if you are going to have any controls whatsover, might as well have volume in my opinion.
Now what you could do is just add a tone capacitor with no pot, for a fixed tone setting. I think this is a worthwhile effort if you want to have little or no controls, a clean exterior, or just have that signature personal sound. You could experiment with both just using various capacitor ratings, or resistor/capacitor combinations to simulate a given tone knob setting. I would set up a cascading resistor box and capacitor box and experiment with combinations until I found a sound I liked and add the necessary components.
PS, I know of at least one CBG performer who has his own secret blend based on this idea to get a "warmer" tone and more controlled sound from a piezo disc in a plain jane "beater" CBG....... He wont share specifics with me at this point though, LOL!
I see an experiemt in my future.
Mark,
Would one put the heat on the clip itself for the transfer of heat? My iron seems to have gotten worse in performance each time I use it. I have the weller model type. I try to keep the tip clean and potted, but not sure sometimes.
on a seperate note has anyone hooked up a straight tone without the vol? I am going to try this on current D-bow build.
Colin
Its been my experience that the likelyhood of damaging components goes up as soldering iron capacity (and quality) goes down. In other words trying to solder with a dinky cheapo iron.....
I have a handful of various irons. The one I prefer is a moderately professional grade, would be considered a bit overkill for electronics, and gets VERY hot right at the very tip, therefore you can solder most stuff like instantly with a little basic tecnique. I sometimes use alligator clamps and little jigs to hold stuff in place, reduces the fingertip burns that get in the way of playing......
Just some thoughts.
Mark
DIY PIEZO PICK UP KITS NOW AVAILABLE AT MJS CBG
ALSO AVAILABLE ON EBAY - DIY PIEZO PICK UP KIT
Kits come with all you need to amplify your cbg including a volume pot and a handmade "ruff nut" volume knob.
Self adhesive felt backing tape and copper shielding tape help to shield against unwanted noise and also secure the piezo to the guitar.
Check out some of the guitars that I have made that are now being played by someone somewhere on my website www.mjscbg.com - there is some other stuff to look at also.
Cheers,
Matt.
