If you mean the screws will be the pole pieces, then they have to contain iron (stick to a magnet). Fatter might be better if you want to transfer more sound.

quick no sense question. Is there such a thing as "better magnetic metal" I know iron, nickel. But is one better than the other? I have a generic single coil for 6 string I want to hide under lid for a 4 string and I want to put new longer screws in and was just curious if there was a better screw to use over another for magnetic response.

The higher the number, the more "open" the sound is. 1 meg would sound the same as connecting the pickup directly to the jack. The lower the number the more treble is cut. 250k is generally used with single coil pickups and 500k with humbuckers.

Can I use a 1meg ohm pot for a volume control? (closest to 500K they had at ratshak) How do the different pots (250k, 500k, etc) affect the sound quality?

Of course, if you're not too worried about having the magnifying-glass, two of these glued to a hunk of wood will do a similar job (minus some of the flexibility).

I've used this method in an 'emergency' and it's ok for what it is.
