Thought I'd drop these nuggets for anyone looking to wire (3) P90s into their guitars.

First, the middle pickup must be reverse-wound, meaning you would wind the pickup clockwise. The neck and bridge pickup are winded in counterclockwise.

Polarities of the magnets for the neck and bridge can either be North or south, but they must be the same polarity identical to each other. The middle pickup will be the opposite polarity from the neck and bridge.

So your pickup orientation can look like this:

1) Neck-North

Middle-South

Bridge-North

-OR-

2) Neck-South

Middle-North

Bridge-South

One thing most of you notice when wiring more than one pickup, that when you switch to a neck or bridge pickup, the sound is loud and clear, but when switched to both pickups, one of the pickups volume reduces drastically. You will still get an interesting tone if you like it, but if you want full throttled pickups with independent volume control without one pickup drowning out the other, you would need to solder your volume pots in reverse. Yes, for all 3 pots.

Instead of soldering a pickup to Lug 3 for the input, solder it to Lug 2 as the input which is the wiper. When you solder Lug 3 as the output to the jack, the signal passes to your amp without any shorts and thus keeping the volume of the pickups at most desirable levels, not to mention full control from the potentiometer.

Here is my crazy diagram, notice the Tone pot goes straight to output jack. Also, I added a dirt circuit for some grime consisting of (2) diodes and mini toggle switch (SPDT or DPDT will do; just need to make an on/off switch.).

First diagram shows to wire the hot, the second shows how to ground it all.

I've treble checked the wiring against Seymour Duncan's wiring diagram, replaced wiring, re-soldered the terminals to insure the connections were solid. Any suggestions, please?
External Power Adapter- How Totag:www.cigarboxnation.com,2020-06-23:2592684:Topic:34999582020-06-23T04:12:09.886ZBrianQ.https://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/BrianQ

I vaguely remember mention of this on some youtube video, somewhere, in order to provide a 4-pole pickup for a 4-stringer, but I can't find the video in question and may even be misremembering who it was (likely!).

I remember it sounded good.

Has anyone tried this? Does anyone have any thoughts/suggestions/recommendations? I can follow a plan and can avoid making a huge mess with a soldering iron but I'm hardly an electrician!

Already in the middle of my build and was going to use a Piezo with a volume knob and jack combo, but just recently got one of Marty Tauber's Wickedbucker, Is there a way to incorporate the wickedbucker into the schematics? Maybe even use a power switch to switch between them? Does anyone happen to have a diagram to help me with this endeavor?

Trying to "hum-proof" my latest build and read somewhere that the jack output leads should be shielded. Can't get shielded cable so am considering wrapping the wires with copper foil tape. I imagine the tape around the ground wire would itself have to be grounded. Does this sound reasonable? Would it be effective? Any comments/suggestions appreciated.

Up to now I've done all my own soldering etc but recently I've been looking on-line at pre-wired harnesses. Almost all of them include a toggle switch. Why would you need one with just one volume and one tone pot? Do they serve a useful purpose?

Hi All,

I have a query about an amplifier I have just acquired, a second hand Roland Cube X20 . It’s in really good condition and all it’s features work fine but when I plug in the jack, before it’s connected to the guitar, I get a distinct hum. This almost disappears when I hold the the other end of the lead - except if I touch the jack tip – then it really screams.

The hum also almost disappears if I touch any metal part of the amp.

When it’s connected to the guitar the hum is still there but not so obvious when it’s being played.

I don’t know much about amps or electronics but I feel that the amp may have an earthing issue. Then again, it might be quite normal. This is my first experience with an amp so I really wouldn’t know.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Regards
