  • As recent "newbie" I assume that this Tab applies to only fretting and not slide. If this is so how do you play this song using slide only. Thank You

    .

    • You use the slide on the skinniest string only, and play an alternating bassline on the 2 heavier open strings. The only exception is that for a moment you use your fingers on the heaviest and skinniest strings at the second fret in the 3rd and 7th measures, and walk up the heaviest string in the 9th measure moving into the chorus, though you could also play the heaviest string always open, it just sounds a bit sour to me. Make sure to check out some of the beginner's videos. You'll need to work on playing an alternating bassline on the 2 heavier strings, mostly open, and play the melody with the slide on the skinniest string. You'd also do well to get KLB's CD4- intro to CBG, which covers all of the technique I used in great detail.

No, it's not simple barre chords. If you're looking for simple barre songs, check out Knot LennyCBG For Dummies and 101 CBG Songs.

Once you get a bit further along and develop some technique, try my tabs. As Keni says, enjoy your practice!

    • You have answered many questions I have been looking for the answers for a while. You should write (not a video) for the person, who for much of his life thought that music just came out of the radio or on a CD. Video’s, these are easy to watch but are difficult to practice in front of and some of us have difficulty remembering all the information Questions like why a chord is major or minor, How to intemperate a tab, strumming and fingerpicking etc. I have found some of the most useful l information in McNally’s Strumstick notes. Can find very little information (written) on finger picking and developing rhythm. Some of us are on the wrong side of 70 and want to play for the family as quickly as possible. This Aussie would like to thank you very much.

    • I'm working on written material to go with video lessons, best of both worlds... stay tuned!

    • I'm glad to help, we all started at zero. I prefer written tabs and instructional books, but some videos are good, and KLB's videos have tab, though you have to copy it from the video yourself. Also, the 101 CBG Songs site has great beginner info, check it out. If you want to tab stuff out yourself, I have posted tab sheet for 3 string CBG's and CBG/harmonica, check my site swampdawgmusic.blogspot.com.

Keep at it, practice at least 20 minutes every day, and you'll have fun. For slide/finger picking, google it, there are many tutorials, and though they are for 6 string, they can be applied to CBG's. I will say that some "for sale" CBG videos are not very good, though I can assure you that KLB's videos are worthwhile, and he will stay in touch with you here, by email and on facebook for any questions or support you need. Check his profile here for some free videos to see if he's right for you.

  • I hope to add more simple, traditional tabs soon for a new songbook "Back Porch Jamboree", so stay tuned to my blog swampdawgmusic.blogspot.com!
