This is an interesting article on covering copyrighted songs

Music Copyright Laws: Using cover song versions legally

Most of the Cart Family songs were just reworked folk songs. A.P. Carter drove around the mountains with a guitar player knocking on peoples door's asking what songs they could teach them. He'd go back and work on them with Sarah and Maybelle and then record them as their own.

Kind like most of us do here.

I think public domain is any song published prior to 1923.

Unhappily, no, I really don't know how to determine that.

I often add verses and/or change the tune to make it something different from the original.

Best regards, Willie

Willie-

Do you know how one determines what Artist's/works are still protected and which are in the public domain? I was even thinking about the Carter Family.

I also agree with Lost Tone and Joker. We should work on songs from artists that were recorded in the 20s or early 30s. But not Robert Johnson.

I'm thinking jug bands (Cannon's, Memphis, Beale Street Sheiks, Mississippi Sheiks, Hokum Boys), Tommy Johnson, Charley Patton, Ishmon Bracey, early Son House, Furry Lewis, Skip James, Sleepy John Estes, Blind Boy Fuller, Willie McTell, Bo Weevil Jackson,Lemon Jefferson, Funny Papa Smith, Lil' Son Jackson, Willie Reed, early Bukka White, Tommy McClennan, etc.

Going slightly further afield, how about taking a blues piano song and arranging for CBG?

Best regards, Willie

In that case the Masked Marvel would be fun!

I agree with Lost Tone, any one of those old blues guys would he great.

Alot of the artists suggested here we would run into copyright issues. The songs by older blues artists are public domain which keeps us out of trouble.
