Smokin' amp (literally)

I bought this amp for $40 at a thrift shop. It sounded great till last night. I smelled something burning, and saw smoke coming out of it. I haven't looked closely but I figure it's a goner, but I'd like to at least salvage the cabinet and speaker. Would a CB Gitty amp kit be strong enough to power it? The speaker is about 8". My other thought was a Smokey amp head. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • You can put anything in it, really? Don’t worry about the wattage. Any amp circuit can be used if it’s 40w or less?  If a Smokey can drive a 100w 4x12 cab, then it can drive a 40w speaker, it’ll only use 1w of output instead of the full 40 watts? Go for it!

    • Ok cool. Thanks. I hate to waste a good cabinet and speaker.

  • Hi James,

your amp is 40  watt unit and the Gitty amp kits are 2.5 watt units. Smokey amp kits are 1 watt. I guess you are not into soldering or have that much experience with electronics. Start looking in those thrift shops again. The alternative is to build your own, there lots of ideas on here and lots of kits you can buy on the interweb, best of luck

    • Thanks. Yeah, not all that knowledgeable on electronics, and my soldering is kind of hit and miss.
