I've become a fan of the zero fret but now I'm looking for a better way. I usually use a brass rod set into a slot but cutting the slot and getting it at the right size and depth is a pain. I got some  Med/ Highest fret wire from Gitty to use but it looks like it may not be high enough. Just installed on a neck with Med/Med frets and the Med/ highest as the Zero. I'm a long way from putting strings on but curious on what you Zero Fret fans think? Will it be a good zero or do I need something bigger? Like a bass guitar fret or something?

Yes, I looked at that but it is only .058 vs .055 . Seemed like a lot of extra money for .003 " to me?

A zero fret is just that, a zero fret. No need to be any higher than the rest. Using a zero fret is no different than putting a capo on the the first fret and playing one fret higher.

I had not thought about it that way! Ummm.

So  I guess what I'm looking for is an action that is good for slide or fretting without having to make sure all the nut slots are exactly the same depth. The nut can be just a spacer and the action is set by the height of the "zero" and bridge. So maybe using a rod like I've been doing is not so bad since I can change action by changing size of the rod.I see the point about it being like using a capo, but when I capo it makes slide playing more of a challenge.

i use the same size fret wire for the zero fret as the rest of them. so much better in all ways then messing with nuts IMHO

Yeah I use the same wire. You can slide no problem, just practice. ;)
Ill never go back, the intonation is too sweet

I had this idea a couple of years back. The idea is the secondary nut is just held in place by the string tension. It can be easily removed to drop the action down to a low level for better fretted playing.
