String Type

I have read that acoustic strings are recommended. Does anyone use electric strings? If so what gauge? I mainly play electric guitar and I have some extra sets laying around. Sets of electric 9's 10's and 12's. Would any of these work ok or do I have to go out and buy a few acoustic sets?

  • Use what you got. My "go to" strings are the bass side of Ernie Ball Slinky "10"s. But I build a lot so I'm always buying the close out $ 1 per set strings....

  • I use acoustic g b e strings in med gauge. I like the sound of one wound string. I tried electric but prefer a wound. T-Bone

    Hi Jim-

If your CBG is electric with electromagnetic pickups, i would go ahead and try the electric strings. That said, you still might want to try acoustic strings. The more mass of iron/steel you have vibrating, the more power you will get out of your pickups.

I use medium weight phosphor-bronze acoustic strings on my CBGs because I play slide and my "touch" has been developed using heavier strings.

  • I just LOVE when the opportunity arises to say this....Free stuff is always good stuff!

Really, there is no reason you cant use those 'lectric strings. I usually use #12 acoustic, but it's because that's what I can get my hands on. A set of those 9's or 10's would be sweet. Someone else may have a different preference, but you can always change strings, don't let that slow you down.
