String gauges

I am wondering if I wanted string gauges 40 30 20 - these are just numbers for example. If one pack of strings the six fifth and forth matched this, and another pack matched but the fifth fourth and third. would the 40 30 20 be the same from each pack? Or is a forty that is the sixth string different than a forty that is a fifth string? I have a bunch of various strings and wondering if it is just the gauge that matters. Thanks

  • Assuming that the strings are of the same metallurgy (i.e. bronze, stainless, etc). then the key difference to consider is if the string from each pack is the same design. That is, are the strings all wound or is the 20 in one pack wound and the 20 in the other is plain.

Normally, you will see the same diameter strings in different positions because one pack may be "regular" gauge and the other is "light" gauge. Same string, just used in different positions on the guitar.

Often, the easiest solution is do decide what diameter strings you need, then order individual strings of the needed diameter. Gitty offers individual strings as does web sites such as Just Strings.

    Hope this helps
