I know most guys here use the A D G strings from a standard acoustic set but has anyone used the E D B strings for one 3 string guitar and the A G E strings for another with any success? I would hate to buy strings and only use half of them.

Those leftover strings are great for Chugger & Diddley bow’s? Back in 2009, both CBGITTY & MGB were only offering very few sets of strings, but now Gitty offers the most taylored sets as well as singles in bulk & the quality is better than MGB’s? https://www.cbgitty.com/string-sets-for-cigar-box-guitars/
I was just going to post this photo with a comment like "Well, nobody has used this forum for nearly a month so I thought I would post this"...then a new thread appears, Yippeee! It's something even if it's over ten years old. Hahaha. . Just to keep the forum alive. Taff
Many places offer single strings. Find out what gauges you are happy with, then order those. Cb Gitty, MGB guitars, Just Strings. If you want special ones like flat wound or half rounds, chrome, you will probably have to order a whole pack. ?
If you want to get to typical guitar range, use guitar strings.... besides, unless your CBG is really long scale, the bass strings would be way, way too long....

Would strings from a bass guitar tune up okay for a 3 string CBG?
Hey... I'll take them all... I like that low down blues grindy sound and use the low half on CBGs and the top half on strummers....
the best,

I almost always use the 3 smallest strings for a 3 string, sometimes the middle 3. I have to admit though, that I have quite a collection of the E and A strings laying around. Anyone interested in them?
