I think they hum because they don't know the words.

 

A hum is often the result of a bad ground. I know you said you were careful, but double check your solder joints, and just for grins, try a different cord, make sure it is not your cord.

Peggy, since I am left without a replacement joke, all I have to suggest involves your amp. Does it have a "ground switch"?

No my amp doesn't have a ground switch......

My next project is to build a cigar box guitar.... however since I live in Canada... I will have to order my cigar box from the US,

I love to build anything in regard to music.......and incidently  I am truely enjoying Cigar Box Nation Website. 

Always looking for info

I always get a bad hum when the kitchen light is on. It has a dimmer switch. They cause alot of interference.

I may have solved a hum problem in a stomp box that I just built. I put two blocks of wood together with a piezo sandwiched in the center.  it hummed a lot so I encased the whole enterior with aluminum foil and it eliminated most of the problem. I will experiment with a similar solution with my stick dulcimers.

In Canada you can get Cuban cigar box's, we can't.  Canadiens do smoke cigars.
