My next tool purchase is going to be a rotary tool, like a Dremel. I have an old craftsman that is not variable speed and really only have a few accessories with it. What do you recommend. I know I want a flex shaft with it, don't know what brand is considered good. Any suggestions?

Be interesting to see if our Lowes would accept a HF coupon. Lot of times it is who is working the register. Some are great and some not so. I have a bid on one and some I watching. It I don't get one by Christmas, I'll find a coupon and give it to my wife. Make it easy for her.
Hey Paul, if you can get your hands on a 20% off Harbor Freight Coupon your local Lowes will probably accept it. I know mine did. They even take expired Home Depot coupons that Home Depot refused to take. I just bought my Dremel there with the coupon. I was tired of trying to get a good deal on EBAY and also a little worried about buying a used one. The one I bought has a 5 year warranty but as far as I know it only applies to the original owner and must be purchaced from an authorized dealer.
Maybe replaced the rheostat or what ever it is in there that makes it variable speed. You could ask them what was wrong or replaced. Maybe just a good cleaning. Why am I responding I don't know. In the old days there were rheostats what-m-call-its.
I haven't won a bid yet on one. Guess I'm what you refer to a cheap

Misbehaving Dremel sent to repair shop on Monday, returned to me today, Friday! That's pretty fast!
It would only operate on highest speed. Now it is fine. Same tool, but fixed. Wonder what they did, so I can do it myself next time?
There are so many models?? I just put a low bid (e-Bay) on a 400series XPR kit. If I don't win it I am going to buy just the tool and than select which accessories I want and buy them separately. The kits come with bunch of items I don't think I would use. But is I win the kit for $42, I will be happy.
My dremel went wonky this week, will only run on super-high speed. The Dremel folks told me if I am still under warranty they'll turn it around between 24 and 48 hours once they receive it. The repair station nearest me is in Racine, WI. So off it went yesterday.
I am miserable without it. I have two instruments on the bench, and I probably can finish them with a standard drill, but there is no going back! I don't have the flex attachment, but the cutting head in indispensable for cutting notches in boxes - metal or wood. Makes cutting a tin for a tin-tar like slicing butter. Noisier, though.
I dont know what I'd do without my Dremel.
I use mine for cutting the holes in the boxes for the neck install.
The last 2 days I've built 10 1 stringers and 4 3 stringers , each neck was installed using the dremel.
I go from 1 box to the next quick.
The dremel gets so hot I have to let it cool off a bit so I can hold it.
I have been using a small grinder with a flex shaft tool that is variable speed for quick jobs. If I am going to be working a while i use an air die grinder which is also adjustable speed. I use these mainly for glass work though. But if you want a decent brand name flex tool I would check into Foredom.

Thanks for the info.

THANKS FOR YOUR INPUTS.

It's also fantastically useful for my other main "hobby"; restoring and repairing bicycles.
