Hey peoples, I just discovered Richard Johnstone last night on youtube and I was simply astonished, check this one out:

I'm just wondering if you could play the same way with a 3 string with a bass string on the top string, as opposed to he twin neck deal. Here's a pic of his CBG:

  • In their promo video Moreland said that the bass string actually goes to a bass amp, and the other strings to a guitar amp. Neat.
  • Johnny lowe uses the smallest bass string whgich I understand will fit a regular guitar tuner
  • Which bass string do you use for the top string?

  • Aaron Moreland is da bomb. Nice guy too.

Speaking of Lowebow, I'm not as partial to it, but pAt mAcdonald (Purgatory Hill here on the Nation) makes that thing sound REALLY good.

  • Brett, In answer to your question, of course you can use three strings and a bass string on a good stout neck. it doesn't have to be two dowels. The advantage to using a total of four strings is the bass string can be the tonic of the open tuning you would use for slide guitar reinforcing the key. By using four strings you will have a major chord when the strings are strummed open, then as you slide up the neck the chords change as you go.
