Last year at the CBG Extravaganza in Huntsville, Microwave Dave performed a one man show while plugged straight into the PA system at the Flying Monkey Arts Center.  Dave uses a variety of effects loops and a mixer in his performances and it seemed to have a great sound.

I have experimented with this at home with a 200w powered PA speaker and I really like the sound.

I mix my foot stomper, cbg's, and vocal mic through various effects pedals and use a reverb effects loop off the mixer for the guitar and vocals.  Then run the output tob the powered speaker. I figure with this set up I could just plug straight into a PA at a venue that has it supplied and cut down on the amount of equipment I would have to lug around

Has anybody else used this approach during perfomances or do you mic an amp to the PA?

Pros and cons?

Just curious what thoughts folks have on this

I am just curious what you all think

  • A big heavy peavey modeling amp with crappy tone. What I like about the straight to pa setup is that cbg's with piezos have a great clear tone through the powered PA, but I also like the sound I am getting with my time bomb with the 3 banger in it

I guess it all depends on your personal sound preference. I like tube amps. I don't like guitars run straight through the PA. But with the right effects, it could be ok.

On the other hand, I don't like lugging around a lot of heavy equipment. If it was me, I'd use a small tube amp and mic that.

What equipment would you be cutting out with this arrangement?
