That makes a lot of sense actually. When it comes to CBGs everything is relative and each one is unique. A lot of “compromises” are made in the building process. That’s kinda the beauty of them though. How many times have you found yourself saying “this really shouldn’t sound this good but it does.”

I often allow the aesthetics of the box dictate where the pup lies. Don't like to interfere with the art/logo/images on those lids. Perhaps this approach restricts the tone, but for me its more about the creativity and the look than the sonic result.

15% of scale length away from the bridge gives the best balanced tone. It's actually 14.96%, or something like that, according to the research I did but I'll be damned if I can find the documents again. lol

As BrianQ pointed out, it just depends on the sound you’re looking for. I’ve done neck position pickups that kill and bridge position pickups that really sound amazing. I can’t say I necessarily prefer one over the other.

Tone is the reason? Neck position gives warm, bassy tone, while the Bridge gives bright, trebley tone & the Middle position is a flatter mid rangey tone which is a mix between the two? Hope this helps, preference really? good luck on your build :)
