I'm thinking about getting an oscillating cutter tool to notch out boxes for CBG necks.  Anyone use one?  I've never had one.

I was actually looking at getting one myself. I saw a few YouTube videos, and it looks like it would do the job just fine. Like any power tool, care would need to be taken to make sure it doesn't get away from you.

It would work for that, but probably not a lot of time savings. Handy for cutting door trim when putting in a new floor and for surgically removing drywall sections.

You have to buy a good one and even then the motor will strain and arc.

I don't think I'd buy one for building guitars since I think I can cut the neck notch with a coping saw as fast.

I bought the Rigid Jobmax starter kit just before Christmas and HD was offering a free additional tool head so I got the impact driver attachment.  I really haven't overly used or abused it and while doing some bathroom remodel work the motor started arcing and smelt of toasted marshmallows.  Made me hungry and forced me to stop working.  If you try one, I wouldn't recommend the Rigid version.

I just bought one to shave down the through box necks so that the neck doesn't touch the soundboard. Works eh

Hey Shane, I'll give you mine if you message me your address. I hate the POS.

I am suspicious of any "miracle" tools, I've been bitten in the ass in the past. I think if you are doing general carpentry, they are probably fine (I despise saber saws, too). I use an X-acto saw and a utility knife to cut the notch. If you are careful that works fine. Cheaper than an oscillating saw, lots cheaper.

I bought one a couple of weeks ago for cbg's. My goal was to reduce the strain on my wrist. It works pretty well for general purpose cutting and sanding. Make sure you use a vise to hold the material because they can slip very easily given their high speed. The best use has been notching out necks that fit into the box. They do this very well and much easier than a coping saw or chisel. Less wear and tear on my wrist makes it worthwhile for me.

So Shane, did you end up getting one?
