  • I have learned that nut slots need not be deep. This saves time and wear and tear on files. About half diameter of the string is all you need.

  • A trick for the thicker (wound) strings is to start the slot with an Xacto or thin saw and finish filing with a cutoff piece of the string you are using. The wound string acts like a file of the perfect size. Tip: The slot should be round on the bottom, to ensure the most contact with the string.
     
    Many of my nuts are ebony, and I have great results with the Xacto saw and torch tip cleaners.
  • I use an old set of welders tip cleaners after cutting a groove with a three square needle file, works well

  • there is some good ideas on the low budget luthier group. I use small generic file pack from home store.
