Hello All,
I have only built about 10 CBG's and with each of those the necks were shaped with hand tools. A 1x2 for the neck with a 1x2 as a back strap. Making the notch in the box was easy enough as everything was square.
Today I tried shaping a neck blank with a 1/2" round over bit on a router table. The finished shape was terrific and did not take a lot of time. My question is if the blackstrap is attached after the router shaping has been done what is the best way to make the notch for the box? Should I make a small template with a 1/2"!rounded piece glued onto a square piece?
Thanks very much for your insights,
SG

Hi Sam, there are other ways. You may like this one, it's what I have always done and it is pretty much what has been done with electric guitar bolt-on necks since day one.
Do your radius routing as you normally do then as you come to the area where the neck enters the box/body lift the router gradually so that the radius disappears into a square edge. Or you can start at the heel end and feed the router into the neck blank, to get the same effect.
A photo may help.
This way you can keep your preferred cut-out shape.
