Hey CBG'rs

I'm sure someone else has discovered this too. While cleaning out my garage I found a very old (Probably over 20 yrs) Realistic (Radio Shack) Dynamic Microphone you know the old ones for the cassette recorders with 2 plugs on the end One for mic and the other to start and pause your recordings.

Well I popped the head on the side of my work bench and POP! goes the top and there was this heavy Microphone head marked "Y34 6" Dunno what that means. I added a 1/4" Mono Phone jack eliminatng the On/Off switch and dropped it into my "BLACK WIDOW" CBG and WOW is that thing is loud! So, from now on when I need a PICK Up for a CBG I'll go to Radio Shack and get their $9.99 Dynamic Microphone and dissect the tip from it. I'm sure I could add Volume and Tone but for now full blast is good, The AMP has a volume knob already anyway

I attached a picture of the Mic Head Looks like I may need to drill a 1" Dia hole for it and hot glue it in place?!

I have the microphone element out of a more professional wireless mic I resurrected from a dumpster. I wired it to a jack and found it was "live", but the volume is very low. I suspect some sort of pre-amp is needed.
Dunno what the deal is with yours but mine seemed like it was jacked all the way up. As soon as I plugged it to my Amp (Which I was using a bit earlier on normal settings) It started squealing and whistling till I dropped to volume and gain. The Mic I used was a small one but seemed to be pretty decent. Had to break off all the plastic with needle nose pliers to get to the insides. I like to take things apart to see how they work and see if I can modify it or repurpose it. Been like that since I was a kid, First thing I opened and actually fixed was an old metal bodied drill that shocked my Pop every time he used it... He couldn't figure out why it wasn't shoking him anymore and couldn't believe his 8 Yr old had taken it apart and fixed the short in it.

You cold have a "condenser" micrphone module, or other type requiring "
phantom power" for adequate gain. Some mics get this from the mixer, some require a battery. (I imagine that is the case with a "wireless")

Stick to using Dynamic, or Ribbon microphones, and you shouldn't have to worry about the need for a little amplitude boost.

Also, a Contact Mic might be fun to experiment with, though no disassemble would be required, simply due to the nature of how those function.

love the blood in the first photo!
Old cb radio mic ...... pull the element and wire it up. Usually very loud.

DUDE!!!!! I just did that about 10 minutes ago I got a CB Mic at the flea market for a buck, and came here to post how well it worked. Did you know you can use a tiny (Or any) speaker the same way. I yanked the speaker out of an old computer cabinet and for grins hooked it up to a 1/4" jack and plugged it to my amp and sure enough it worked great as a mini pick up. What gave me the idea was because I hooked my earphones to the Mic input on my computer and one of them transmitted my shouting "$#!+" to the computer when it didn't work. so I blew into the earphone and it worked as a mic.

Thanks! I guess you just need to try something to see if it works?! Ya think? MZ-HANDYMAN Matt Towe said:

That thing looks like a shower head but I bet it works great!
I guess the red wire goes to the tip in the other drawing?

Does anyone know if you can use parts salvaged from a modern phone? I opened up a phone I had in the office. The speaker looks similar to the element in the first photo but there is a small ceramic capacitor wired across it. Could this still be used as a microphone?

Thanks,
Nick.
I remember seeing a video where somebody plugged a set of headphones into a guitar amp, spoke into the headphones and sound came out the amp. I'm checking into it.
Yup it will work... Bust open your broken headphones and you have 2 pick ups!

I remember when I was a kid, plugging my headphones into the mic jack on a portable cassette recorder. It's just basic electronics, the speaker normally converts electrical impulses into sound waves. When you hook it to an amp, it converts the sound waves into electrical impulses. This is what I love about this site. I get to remember all the stuff I have forgotten over the years. lol
BLOOD: yup guitar strings are pretty sharp! After I took the pic there was blood on my camera, my pants and a couple of other things before I noticed it. The fact that I can't see worth a cr@p doesn't help much either...

The pickup in the first picture(s) is now installed in my first CBG and the fact that I drove my wife nuts playing with it all day makes it even better! HERES HOW I DID IT...

LOOK KALMARIO, NO BLOOD! **MZ**
