multi color staining and designs

Has any body played with different colored stains for fret markings and or cool designs on diddley bows and CBG's? I am looking for a good technique for doing this without the stain seeping out under neath my masking tape.

Hey Steve,
I haven't done this yet but have considered it since I'm not really ready to put the time and energy into inlaying something. My tools are a little less than precise. I was thinking that I'd do the base coat however I wanted, seal it, sand a little bit where I wanted the next stain, stain it, and seal it again. I'm thinking that might take care of the bleeding under the tape. Maybe you could use the bleeding to your advantage for a nice fade or something though. Let me know how this works if you try it.
