Hi Folks,

It's been a too damned long since I posted on here. I was wondering if you all knew any tricks for fixing the random buzzing that happens on a license plate guitar. I've tightened all of the screws down. My old trick was to put tape, or paper between the license plate and the wood, I even had duct tape on the bolt for a while, nothing seems to work. If I press down on the license plate near the bridge while playing it seems to go away, but I can't do that all the time. Thanks for your help!

Sincerely,

Todd

Hi, try increasing the downward pressure of the strings on the bridge.

One way I can see of doing this bylooking at things from the photo is as follows: Remove the screw that is under the strings in front of the tailpiece, get a longer screw, fashion a suitable bar out of timber, brass or aluminium, drill a hole in it for the screw to pass through and back into either its original hole or a new hole. Tighten the screw down until the bar puts the desired amount of pressure onto the bridge.

This of course means that the plate is not held down by that screw, I've got an idea for that, but I'll let you work that one out.

Just a thought Taff.

Hi man,

Had this problem with my sound hole screen covers. Fixed it by placing rubber between the screen hole cover rim to the wood. Similar to point 2 in Dennis post. In my view, the cause for buzzing is vibrating metal on the wood and you want to eliminate that.
P.S. that is one cool instrument

Maybe something to try- looking at the picture it looks like the plate is tight against the wood at the screws, but a little less so on the ends and in between. Makes sense as the screws hold it tight.  Anyway, if you can remove the plate and slightly bend it in a wave shape so the center and ends are lower, and the screw hole areas are higher, the screws will flatten it out when installed but the center and ends will be tight to the box.  The exact amount is the guesstimate part!  It is trial and error.
