Interface with computer?

I put a new sound card (Diamond Extreme 5.1) in my computer a while ago, and I've noticed that there are tons of software amps, effects, and other goodies available to download from various sources. Never tried to "plug in" directly to the computer, can I just get a 1/4" to 1/8" reduction jack and go directly to the sound card? I know there are various "interfaces" available, but I'm thinking cheap as usual....

  • Selecting the sound card in the Windows audio panel did the trick; I'd selected it under "sound" but not "record".

I have a copy of "Band In A Box", which is a program with enormous potential but is a little intimidating. So many things you can do....
  • fast track usb m-audio.....100 bucks, does the trick (or tascam 122)
  • You probably need to double check the recording settings in your Windows sound panel. (The little loudspeaker icon in your system tray)

I stuck a 1/8" adapter onto a guitar cord and plugged it into the "line in" jack on the card... That works and I can hear the guitar through the stereo speakers.
However... The card came with the Audacity sound-mixing editing software which I have installed, but I can't get Audacity to recognize the signal.

  • I do it all the time.
  • If you can use a softwaer amp as a preamp, I don`t see why not...
  • I did the same thing, just used a reducer and plugged the jack from the piezo into the sound card and it worked pretty well. Not real loud, but good enough for practicing.
