Looking  for ideas on supporting a nut from the back side on a scarf joint other than grooving out a notch for the nut to fit into.

Seems I saw a pic of a build once where their was some support behind the nut on the tuner side so it was supported from the front on the fretboard end and back

Thanks

I saw one someplace( sorry looked at so many videos and pictures) where the bone or ivory nut had  2-3 countersunk screws into the fretboard from the tuner side. Also saw some where the head had a piece of wood laminated and shaped like the head. The nut was resting between that and the fretboard. Hope that helps. BTW that's what I'm doing on my build.

I found the picture for the nut between the fretboard and head veneer. This is from "ADVANCED CIGAR BOX GUITAR BUILDING GUIDE" a free download. I know this is probably late, but for future reference.

I've been using a bolt/screw for a nut on my CBG's for awhile now. I use a half-round file to make a groove for the screw. I usually add a drop of super glue so it doesn't fall off when changing strings.

Gluing or screwing a piece of wood in front of the nut is a good idea and usually looks better.

Hi,

My name is Jerry and I'm a nut. Self-supporting, but I have been on the dole too, as well...yeah it seems a bit of wood behind the nut, clamped n glued would do the trick...I personally like a big zero fret unless I'm going for higher action at the nut.,.,,.best wishes on those new builds......

I’m not sure, but are you describing the support in my pic?  If so it is a CB Gitty product.  By the way, this is more of a string placement, because the “nut” is a fret, a zero fret.

That's very similar to the one I was describing, but it was bone or plastic and the screws were countersunk.

They have those at guitar fetish if you’re not feeling adventurous?

Hi Brent, lots of good ideas here. Most of the time I just glue my bone or ebony nuts up against the end of the fingerboard and the surface of the peghead. Never had an issue, may not work in every situation but when I do use it, it works fine.

Agreed

Yup . . . that almost always works. No need to reinvent the wheel on this.

I generally use a zero fret, but glue a bone or plastic nut against the end of the fingerboard for use as a string guide.

Prior to the gluing, test fit the nut both for width and string spacing. Then, file the string slots deep enough that they're right at fingerboard level. A couple drops of super glue and you're good to go.

It's quick, simple, and effective.

As a side question, can you use a fretted bridge as a nut????
