I got this LaFlor Dominicana box at the flea market for 10 bucks, which I thought was pretty doggone good since they are so hard to find.

The box is physically very large, 18 inches on the wide side, narrowing down to 10 inches n the narrow side.

If I put just a regular 1x2 neck on it, the body will look huge and the neck will look puny. I want to maintain some sort of esthetics to the build. I toyed with a double neck, and John Maw suggested a 4 string mandolin, double coursed.

Any suggestions:

Send it to me. There. Aren't you glad you asked.
You know what would be perfect for this build is a fanned fret type thing, seems it would go well with the shape of the box.

Have you seen Don McCann's Blackbirds?

Or Delvero's Harptar?

I have one in stock too, and I see what talented folks can do with that box, so I keep waiting until I'm talented enough to do it justice.

What about a bass guitar with a diagonal (left-bottom to right top corner) neck?

Honkin' big baritone Uke.

Regular ol cbg.

make a real "axe" out of it.

Oh Yea, then it will sit on YOUR workbench while you agonize over what to make out of it.

Yea, I have seen those, and I don't think I have my game quite up to theirs yet. But maybe one day...

Dan, I had two of those when i built the Harptar, its a box you just need to look at and lay pieces of wood with it to get a feel of size and design. And yes, based on what i see that you've done, you are ready. My design came as a result of looking at other guitars (especially Harp Guitars) and making cardboard cut-outs before i attacked the box! Can't wait to see what you will make!

Thank you for the compliment, coming from you it means a lot. I just have to keep looking at it until something pops in to my head.

sweet box man! i'd be temped to go the double neck route myself or try a six string. have fun with it!

That would make an awesome CB bass (stand-up type).  Long thick neck would keep the proportions. I just got this one, size is 17" x 6" x 6":

Yeah! Great stuff for a great upright!
