I'm committed on this box. The hole for the humbucker is cut and finished, but with the mounting ring which is a flat piece of metal the height of the pickup is a problem at its lowest possible point and still be on the screws. I've been thinking about cutting the flat area off and bending the strap and drilling a new hole which would at least in my minds eye allow for a lower possible position.
I looked for longer screws in the same size but to no avail. I could I suppose use the next larger size screw but 1/4 inch longer and just open the hole in the strap a little.
On a lighter note and pretty much unrelated, I stopped by a cigar shop and got 7 WOOD Punch and Arturo Fuente boxes for $3 each. No paper covered boxes but the Fuente boxes have a nice looking paper piece in the center of the wooden lid. I'm ecstatic!

I do not know if it would work but longer screws seem sensible to me. tack in the screws with glue for looks and lower the pups to the right height and shim them in, I do not know if this would affect the sound can't see it since it is touching wood. How high is to high, got a photo Ron.
Charlotte, checked out your photos, you could make a thicker fret board, if you have already made it put a thin piece under it, you can slim down the back of the neck if you need to. Or maybe put the plate on the underside of the box lid and just have the pu stick out through the hole, you can put a thin piece of plastic/wood on top to replace the plate for looks. Higher nut and play slide, well I am reaching now Keep us informed. Ron.
Love those Arturo Fuente boxes ,, some the best I've mad have been with those boxes
angle the neck, it'll raise the strings higher
The 7th box is in the upper left and the shadows make it nearly invisible, but this was a good score. All boxes are over 10 1/2 inches.
I left the humbucker problem at the shop, so I couldn't take photo's but the neck is already so close to finished that my solution has to be somehow lowering the pickup. I'm fairly certain that if I eliminate the mounting ring and countersink the screw holes the height will be within reason but then I lose the great looks of the ring. I did pick up some1 1/2" #6 screws in stainless but haven't looked at them compared to the metal strap they would have to go through.
Making a new bend in the strap seems like the only solution but the strap looks brass and I'm thinking (after a night to sleep on it) that the only difficulty would be if it doesn't want to bend and starts to break. Worst possible scenario is that I scrap this box and pickup and luckily I have 3 more of this exact box.
If you are using that mini-strat style bridge, then diddling with the height of the fretboard above the top or introducing a neck angle will only screw things up for you, as those bridges are pretty limited in terms of vertical adjustment.
Get the longer screws and try drilling the lugs out slightly, or use a needle file to ream them out. Be careful you don't make the holes too big, but if it's a brass baseplate you should be able to get the screws to self-tap into plate. I've done it myself in the past, it's a bit of a bodge, but take it slowly and you should get it to work. The other way would be to drill the holes oversize and solder or glue nuts to the lugs.
Don't have a picture, but mine is nowhere close to what your picture looks like. I put one of my fretboards next to it and it was sitting higher than the fretboard. Even though it is resolved, (I think), I'll take a picture tomorrow morning and post it.
you know, another idea you might consider is glueing a block of wood under each screw inside the box and putting the springs under the pup rather than over, like a pup screwed into a solidbody.. then you could open the holes in the mount a ways so you can get a wee screwdriver thru em to adjust the height
Well, I finally did the obvious. I feel kind of stupid, but here is the problem. I measured the screws that came with the pickup and the height adjustment screws are 7/8" long which makes them start the pickup in the lowest position 3/8" higher than what would be normal with a normal 1 1/4" long screw. So the simplest of all solutions is to order some screws from stewmac. Stupid me, I figured there was a standard that everyone adhered to.
